The 2026 11th FinVolution Global Data Science Competition: Turn-taking Modeling in Conversation
Competition Description
Human conversation is inherently full-duplex: we speak while listening, think while speaking, predict pauses for natural turn-taking, signal listening with brief feedback, and interrupt politely. These form the cornerstone of human social interaction.
With the emergence of GPT-4o, Gemini Live, and open-source systems like Moshi and Freeze-Omni, voice interaction has entered the era of “native audio”. Full-duplex models break the conventional ASR→LLM→TTS pipeline, enabling end-to-end modeling and cutting latency down to below human perception. However, knowing exactly “when to speak up” and “when to keep silent” remains a fundamental bottleneck to a smooth user experience.
The 2026 11th FinVolution Global Data Science Competition focuses on turn-taking modeling for multi-dialect Chinese conversations. Based on the historical audio of bilateral dialogues, the task is to predict the occurrence of relevant speech events within a given time window. This enables AI to perceive user intent with low latency, avoiding overly aggressive interaction and awkward conversational silences.
